A Few Cool Stops In Mid Hudson Valley New York (Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, Kingston)

People think of New York only as New York City. However, New York is one of the most beautiful states (keep in mind i have biases). I lived in the Mid Hudson Valley for over 10 years, and I absolutely loved it.

During our family road trips to Maine, we made sure to make the Mid Hudson Valley one of our stops to break the road trip. There is so much to see and do, so we made sure to show our girls a few of our spots. Keep in mind there is so much more to do, but here are a few cool spots.

  1. Vanderbilt Mansion - Hyde Park, NY

Historic house museum. Personally, we could spend many hours here are play in the grounds or have a picnic.

This is a photo of the actual house (below).

2. Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site

Depending how much time you have, you can visit the house, they also have a small visitor center (just by the parking lot). If you do not have a lot of time, at least park and walk the gardens where you will see the burial place of the 32 president of the USA. Eleanor Roosevelt is buried alongside him. Also walk by the house and go around the mansion once.

3. The Walkway over the Hudson

This place has not been there that long, but we really enjoy going for a walk and show our girls some of our most visited places when we lived there. We lived in Highland NY for many years and had to show our girls our very first home.

4. I had to visit the beautiful site of Marist and get a new sweatshirt for my Alma Mater (Masters Degree)

5. Deising's Bakery in Kingston, NY.

Ok so this was our first time here, but it was a great lunch stop. My husband and teenage girl were literally watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver during our road trip and came across the episode where they talk about Deising's bakery in Kingston. We had to add it to one of our stops. The lunch was great, the people working there were fabulous, so yes, it was worth it.

Other places that I wished we could have stopped: The CIA in Hyde Park, Rhinebeck NY (we only drove by), Lake Minnewaska, Mohonk Mountain House and some of the trails around, the "Gunks", oh and so much more!!!!
