Biking to Pittsburgh

A lot of people have asked me about the route and tips for my 33-ish miler (there and back) into The Point of Pittsburgh. We did it with kids. My 11 years old biked and my 6 years old was in the chariot and we took plenty of breaks and stops for them!

Here are all the details but please message me if you have any questions! Starting Point: McKeesport Transportation Center Park and Ride https://goo.gl/maps/yBhU4hEWkMindzYu9

Turn around: The Point (Pittsburgh)

Distance: roughly 33 miles (there and back)

Terrain: trail (mostly paved and avoiding roads). With some elevation around the bridges but mostly “flat”.

What you will see: - Kennywood - Pump House & Water Tower, site of the 1892 Battle of Homestead - Waterfront Goats - Sandcastle - Hays Bald Eagle Nest (bring a light set of binoculars) -Pittsburgh South Side (we had lunch here on the way back) - Hot Metal Bridge - The City of Pittsburgh and The Point (plenty of bridges and opportunities at the Point)

Extra Tips: - Water refill: behind Kennywood (some fountains around but not all open due to Covid) - Near the Point there is one somewhat tricky part, close to the Smithfield street bridge. We took a turn to ride a ramp down to the river instead of proceeding along the city streets, that way we avoided all street and kept it safe for the kids. Just passed that, there is a very narrow area, but we were able to cleared it with the chariot, so it is absolutely doable! https://goo.gl/maps/1QV6BZxidtN29P8j9 . Enjoy and let me know if you have questions or additional suggestions.

Here are a few pictures from the trip!
