Iceland Ring Road Trip

Updated: Nov 6, 2019

I recently came back from my Iceland trip and it was one of my favorite places of all time! A friend and I rented a mini camper for the both of us to go around the island and I must say, it was so worth it. This post will be about the high level details of the trip. However, I will write multiple posts with details about each part of the whole experience.

Let me give you some high level details about what we did. We visited the island only for 7 days. We traveled Saturday, spent all 7 days in the island going around (Sunday thru Saturday) and then traveled back home on Sunday. Many people told us not to do the ring road because it was a short trip, but we still did and we do not regret it.

Day 1 (Sunday) was at Reykjavik exploring the city and some of the museums. Day 2 started the whole road trip around (with the golden circle), then we headed east, north, finally west before returning to Reykjavik area on day 6 (Friday night). On day 7, we stayed at the blue lagoon hotel (Silica hotel) because after sleeping in our camper for a week, we needed a nice bed and a place where we could relax. This night stay was pricey, but we loved every minute of it. The Silica hotel is fabulous with vip access to the blue lagoon included, amazing views and an awesome crew working there. That night we got lucky and saw the northern lights, just in time to return home the following morning.

High Level Details About the Camper:

We rented the camper with "Happy Campers" in Iceland. We did a pretty good amount of research ahead of time and decided to go with them. Do not expect a huge camper, this was more like a minivan that was fixed to have a bed, a mini fridge, a tiny sink with a water that you can pump and a camping stove in the back of the van. We also had wifi in our camper which was awesome for navigation. We knew pretty much all the details before we rented it, so it met our expectations. They have a very nice website with lots of photos, a blog, pricing and many details, if you are interested in finding more about them (Note: we do not get paid by them to post their website, I just want to share my own experience). We handled everything online ahead of time. They picked us up at the airport for the start of the trip and then we dropped the camper just before heading to the airport for our return. We returned it during off hours (they have a process for that), so we got a cab to the airport from their site. The happy campers have stickers all over their campers so you can easily tell when another happy camper traveler is around. One fun fact about recognizing the happy campers is that whenever we saw another camper, we always waved to them and they did the same to us so that brought smile to our faces every single time! https://happycampers.is/

Our Happy Camper

Iceland was a dream come true for me. I had such an amazing time, that now I want to go back with my husband and kids in a camper too! I have so much to say and share about Iceland that I will make additional posts with many details about the whole experience going around Iceland in a camper in one week.

I will make posts about the camper experience (gas, food, campsites), the south, east, north, west of the island, the blue lagoon, northern lights, the crazy weather, what to pack, how to save money, and more. Stay tune!
