Mother - Daughter Trip to New York City

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

I just came back from my ”mother-daughter“ trip with my 12 year old girl to NYC. Now that she is vaccinated and Broadway is back, we wanted to spend a few days there and had an amazing time! The city has changed quite a lot and Hudson Yards seems like the “place to be” these days. Be aware that to go inside buildings and eat indoors, you must present proof of vaccination.

Here are some ideas for what to do with your daughter in a “mother-daughter” trip!

1. Little Island

It is free to enter but over the weekends after 12 you must reserve online. It is an absolute must! Super beautiful and quite new if you haven’t been to the city post Covid.

2. The high line

An elevated rail line for people to walk and enjoy the outdoors. Also free and so fun to walk without worrying of cars and crossing streets. You get a view of beautiful buildings, including the Empire State from the distance.

3. The Vessel

Towards the end of the high line (or the beginning depending how you enter it) you can find the vessel. This beautiful structure connected staircases is currently closed. They opened briefly post pandemic but again closed (as of October 2021). You can still see it from the outside and makes it an awesome insta photo spot.

4. The Edge (at Hudson Yards)

Just by the vessel, you can look up and see a glass triangle sticking out of a building. Your will find of the best high views of the city from the edge. Extremely popular in instagram. You must reserve it online (for a fee) and you go to the 4th floor of the building where the whole experience commences. Note: people still likes the Empire State Building but personally I think you should make a choice between Empire State or The Edge.

5. The Statue of Liberty and 911 Memorial

My kid really wanted to see the statue, since we have been in a kick of National Parks and monuments, so I made that happen. Make sure you book through the national parks link. There are some outside vendors with tours that are not the official ones. You can reserve online for a fee. We did the pedestal ticket which included Ellis island too.

On our way to the statue, we got off at the 911 memorial station to walk around and see the monument. From there, then we walked to battery park to get the ferry (It was a bit of a walk but we wanted to enjoy the day outside).

6. Time Square

We couldn’t go to NYC and no walk around Time Squares! It is great to see during the day but also at night. We got lunch in Times Square one day to enjoy the craziness of the lights and adds.

7. Broadway Broadway post Covid is back! I took my daughter to see one of my favorites, Wicked! I booked it in advance online.

8. Chelsea Market (Shopping and Walk)

New York is also the Mecca for shopping but I did not want to spend too much time into the stores that we can visit anywhere else, so I think going to the Chelsea Market is a great way to walk around some stores while still have the NYC feeling.

9. Brooklyn Bridge / Dumbo / Pebble Beach

I am combining these three into one because they are all in the same area and it is easily done at once. Dumbo is an extremely insta photo place. Pebble beach is just a walk from there and you get amazing views of the Brooklyn bridge.

10. Central Park (Optionally - due to rain - we went to the Harry Potter Store)

Depending on the season and the weather, you will see the big changes in colors at Central Park. Rent a bike or a tandem bike and enjoy a few hours outdoor. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do it because it started raining on us badly. Instead, we went to the new Harry Potter store. If you go during the weekend, make sure you go to get on the virtual line which could take hours. You scan the QR code at the entrance and then they text you when they are almost ready for you (you have one hour window to show up). We went on a Monday so we were able to walk in right away.

Bonus: Washington square, Grand Central Terminal, Madison Square Garden, plenty of options for the sports fans too. We love friends so we also did the Friends experience which was fun for us.
