Top Things to do in Pittsburgh in the Wintertime

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

My childhood friend was planning to come to Pittsburgh this week (for the first time) so I had this huge plan on what to do with her and her family for a few days. Unfortunately, all our plans are now postponed for later because of Covid. However, I want to share with you what I had in mind doing with them. I think these are family friendly options in this area.

  • Ice Skate in the City (The Rink at PPG Place)

We wanted to go ice skating around the tree in beautiful PPG place. If you have never seen the city, this is a good way to enjoy a family friendly event in the winter.

  • Mount Washington

This is always a quick must stop whenever I have visitors in town. No matter the season, this is always an amazing view of the city of Pittsburgh.

  • Roberto Clemente Museum

My friends were visiting from Puerto Rico (in the Winter, I know!!!) so this museum is a beautiful connection between Puerto Rico and Pittsburgh. Roberto Clemente was such an important figure in this city but also in Puerto Rico, plus this museum is so awesome no matter where you are from, as long as you like baseball and history.

  • Snowboarding / Skiing

You would think that coming to a cold place for a vacation coming from Puerto Rico is "bananas" but seeing snow and doing winter sports is truly a treat for people who never get to enjoy them. My plan was to go to Boyce Park Ski Slopes, this is a good location for beginners. Always keep an eye in their facebook page to make sure they are open (the weather has been so variable, so they have been closing on very warm or rainy days). Our plan b was going to be to go to Hidden Valley or plan c Seven springs (hidden valley is a little bit cheaper).

  • Snowtubing

We were also planning to do some snowtubing at the same locations as the skiing. This is always a good alternative for the people who may not like skiing/snowboarding or that just want to have a much quicker or cheaper option in the snow.

  • Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

If you can snatch some tickets for Phipps in the winter, this is an absolute must. It is very popular for locals, so it gets sold out very quickly. I love going with the kiddos every year! It is stunning in the Winter (although, worth it all year around).

  • Carnegie Museums and/or Andy Warhol Museums

The Pittsburgh museums are always an excellent choice during the winter to escape from the cold weather. There is a museum pretty much for any kind of audience. I was planning to do the Science Center because we wanted to see the new exhibition showing and also let the kids do some of the parts in the sports center to burn some energy!

  • Nationality Rooms and Cathedral Steps - (Resuming operations in February 2022 - always pending Covid restrictions in the building)

Finally, I was planning to do the Nationality Rooms because I find them extremely interesting and educational. Unfortunately, I found out they were closed due to the covid restrictions this week, so please make sure you check their schedule and regulations ahead of your visit.
