Weekend Trip at Deep Creek - Spring 2021

During this Easter break, we decided to go in a quick getaway with the family for a beautiful weekend in the spring to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. Deep Creek is only about 2 hours from the city of Pittsburgh. It is a quick and easy drive from the city.

We stopped at Ohiopyle to enjoy Cucumber Falls about half way through the drive, then passed by Nemacolin Resort (since we just watched the Bachelor), and finally made it to Deep Creek.

It was a hiking trip. It was a bit chilly but not enough snow to go tubbing or snow boarding. It was not super warm to go into the lake either. So we decided to go hiking and enjoy the outdoors! It was great with the family (kids and seniors included)!

First, let me share some photos of Ohiopyle (Cucumber Falls). We love this place so much that we made a stop to break our drive. We love it. The hike is a bit steep but very short (not even a mile). I took this photo from the top of the short trail.

Then for our very first hike at Deep Creek we went to: Rock Maze Trail

Easy (fairly flat if you do not climb the rocks) and about 1 mile with some exploration. This one was the favorite of the kids because they got the climb all kinds of rocks.

Tip: we went early in the morning on a cold morning (just before 9AM) and "it was all for us". On the hike back to the car, we started seeing a lot of people coming through the trail.

Swallow Falls State Park - Canyon Trails

Easy (with steps), just aver a mile loop. It gets crowded but it is absolutely beautiful.

We went as a family, with people ranging from 6 years to 70 years old.

On Easter, we decide to do a little bit more miles, so we went for a 5 miles hike loop at Deep Creek Lake State Park. We did the blue hike called "Lookout Trail", which starts with the yellow trail (Indian Turnip Trail) and finishes with a red trail (Beckman's Trail) to do it as a loop (as you can see in the map below).

Easy to medium hike. Some steeper areas but using clear trail through all 5 miles.

The seniors decide to stay home, but all the kids came, including my 6 years old little girl.

Deep Creek is a vacation spot with many rentals and plenty to do. Absolutely gorgeous all year around. If you are planning to go for hikes, these were our three nice hikes over 2 days in a chilly weekend. If you go in the winter or the summer, there are plenty of other activities you could do with the snow or in the lake. Enjoy!
